When action is not least for systems with action-dependent Lagrangians

چکیده

The dynamics of some non-conservative and dissipative systems can be derived by calculating the first variation an action-dependent action, according to variational principle Herglotz. This is directly analogous Hamilton commonly used derive conservative systems. In a similar fashion, just as second system's action infer whether that possible trajectories are dynamically stable, so too stable. this paper I show, generalizing earlier analyses for systems, how calculate apply it two physically important systems: time-independent harmonic oscillator time-dependent oscillator.

When action is not least

We examine the nature of the stationary character of the Hamilton action S for a space-time trajectory worldline x t of a single particle moving in one dimension with a general time-dependent potential energy function U x , t . We show that the action is a local minimum for sufficiently short worldlines for all potentials and for worldlines of any length in some potentials. For long enough worl...

When action is not enough: tool-use reveals tactile-dependent access to Body Schema.

Proper motor control of our own body implies a reliable representation of body parts. This information is supposed to be stored in the Body Schema (BS), a body representation that appears separate from a more perceptual body representation, the Body Image (BI). The dissociation between BS for action and BI for perception, originally based on neuropsychological evidence, has recently become the ...

Maximum entropy change and least action principle for nonequilibrium systems

A path information is defined in connection with different possible paths of irregular dynamic systems moving in its phase space between two points. On the basis of the assumption that the paths are physically differentiated by their actions, we show that the maximum path information leads to a path probability distribution in exponentials of action. This means that the most probable paths are ...

Least-Commitment Action Selection

The principle of least commitment was embraced early in planning research. Hierarchical task networks (HTNs) reason about high-level tasks without committing to specific low-level steps. Partial-order planning arose from a complementary desire to avoid unnecessary ordering commitments. But most of today’s partial-order planning algorithms commit to a single producing step when supporting an ope...

When an Action is an Intentional Omission

I use the normative theory of intentional omissions to argue that ordinary uses of ‘ s intentionally’ are systematically ambiguous. There are occasions where they might be used to attribute intentional omissions rather than intentional actions. One can thus explain a number of puzzles that have been taken to be puzzles about the concept of intentional action: the Knobe effect, the connection ...
